Darrell’s Weekly Wrap 25/11/2018

Several Wednesday golfers hit off last week but only a few finished as the rain closed in and made it pretty miserable and the club house was a much better option. The ladies however did finish and the winner was Rhonda McIlveen with 37 points, with Meg Fisher finishing second with 34.

The open weekend started on Friday with the annual veteran’s tournament and 91 players entered and in some very tough conditions on a very windy some good scores were had by members and visitors alike.

A Grade went to our own Bruce (The Gnome) McMullen with 38 points from Rowan Chandler with 37. B Grade and the day’s best score went to Capitol Golf Club member Greg Constantine with 41 points. Runner up was John (The Cocky Hater) Holman 37.

C Grade winner was ex local Wally Simmonds (Werris Creek) with a score of 37 from Guyra’s Phillip Devlin, 35. In the ladies Shirley Bruce Glen Innes was a clear winner from Coleen Taggart 35.

Given the very trying condition a great day was had by all and greenkeeper, Warren Lawlor and our band of volunteers presented the course as good as it could possibility be. Well done to you all.

Tim Murray (Armidale) and Courtenay Dade (Uralla) are the Uralla and Central North mixed champions after Saturday’s open mixed at Uralla. Craig Hyde and Amanda Carr (Armidale) were next best, whilst the best nett score was had by Brendan and Lisa Meehan with a sensational +13.  Arnie Simmonds and Annie Waters (Armidale) +7 took second place. John Schuman (Armidale) and Jane Dell (Ballina) +6 were next best.

Sunday completed three very good days of Golf at Uralla with visitors coming from far and wide. Tim Murray made it a weekend double when he joined with Neil Bullen to take the main event with a two under par score from John Coote (Inverell) and Darrell Carson with a one shot difference.

Trevor Neaves and Chris Chrittenden (both from Dorrigo) won the handicap section with +10 from the local combination of Josh Clark and Aaron Blanch, + 8 after a countback with Todd Francis and Matt Jackson (Guyra).

A good day was had by all and I am sure all players are keen to come back next year as this golf course continues to improve. I would like to thank all the volunteers that helped make this weekend such a success and a special thanks to our sponsors Bryan McNamara (Bridges Finance) and Matt Sutton (Sutton Insurance brokers Inverell) for their kind assistance.

Quote of the week: “Machines should work, people should think.”

Good Golfing.
